Tasty Tone: Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Éclair

custom_shop_eclair_001_1Hi! My name is Austin Bryan and like pretty much everyone reading this, I’m a guitarist and a Seymour Duncan fan. A while back, Seymour and I interacted on Facebook on his birthday and he had told me that MJ had made him a very special Éclair. To my knowledge I stupidly thought he was talking about a special pickup set rather than the tasty desert. I called MJ and asked her how the Éclairs sounded, and she immediately started laughing. So right then and there we started coming up with a pickup idea tailored to creating a new pickup for Seymour that would meet his tonal needs, and which also met mine. The recipe we came up with included ‘aged’ zebra bobbins (reversed on the bridge pickup), ‘aged’ poles and Alnico III magnets. The neck pickup measured 8k, and the bridge was 12k.
When I received the pickups on Christmas morning I immediately installed them into a rare 1983 Gibson Challenger II guitar. The result was a smooth tone that was neither harsh nor unpleasent. The tone was very transparent, but also fat and full. You can hear every note on the full strum of a chord and you can get a very clear sound. The neck position is smooth and bluesy, while the bridge position is tight and full. When the two humbuckers are in the middle position, you can achieve the best of both. I love the first version for how it is not too high of output and focuses more on a “sweet” and “creamy” tone. But after the pickup was created Seymour caught on to the creation and altered it to meet his specifications.
EclairThe new version of the Eclairs that Seymour designed was two humbuckers (7.4k on the Neck position) and (15k on the bridge position). The neck pickup’s magnet is an Alnico IV, and the bridge pickup’s magnet is an Alnico II – both magnets are altered from the Alnico III on the first version.
JMI Music writes: “MJ says they are brand new and that Seymour has them in his guitar now! The Eclairs evolved from the JB and Jazz combo that Seymour likes so much but they are not a JB and a Jazz. The neck is Alnico IV, the bridge is alnico II and they’re both single conductor.” MJ said the bridge is wound for more cut and clarity and the neck is smooth and articulate. This is also similar to the original set.
Version I (Alnico III Magnets and mid-high output “hot-rodded PAF type”) and Version II (Alnico IV/II Magnets and high-output “JB/Jazz type.” These sets are available in either Zebra or Black, with “Aged” or “New” bobbins/parts, as well as “Single Conductor” or “4-Conductor Wiring.” $300 (set)/ $160 (individually).
